Napocor to buy another coal supply

National Power Corp., the country’s largest provider of electric power, plans to extend by purchasing another 195,000 metric tons (MT) of steaming coal to augment part of the requirements of its 1,000-megawatt (MW) Sual power plant located in Pangasinan.

The national Power Corporation has been under pressure to locate coal sources but still, the company is assuring the public of sufficient power generation for the mean time.

About a fourth of the 8,600 megawatts of electric supply in the Luzon grid is supplied by the Sual and Pagbilao plants, with an added supply from the 200-MW Naga and the privatized 600-MW Masinloc coal-fired power plants.

Napocor said it will need to import 3.4 million MT of coal for all of its coal plants for this year. Caused by the privatzation of som of its power plants, Napocor's coal requirement for 2009 has been lowered from the 4.18 million MT of coal in 2008.
